9.24 Recap: Wilkinson Interrupts Aquinas Dream Season, Johnson Nips ECI in OT

September 25, 2010

It was a night of mild upsets around Region 7-A and Class A.

The Irish from Augusta traveled to Irwinton and saw their offensive juggernaut limited to only 7 points as previously undefeated Aquinas lost to Wilkinson County 13-7. Aquinas, leading Class A in points scored going into this weekend, had been ranked by some in the Top 10.

Washington-Wilkes got things on track this week and nipped Class AAA Oconee County 21-20. The Tigers overcame a 20-14 deficit with a touchdown midway the final quarter. The 1-3 Warriors missed a short field goal with just under four minutes left. [game story]

Hancock Central gave Twiggs County a much tougher time than expected in the Cobra Pit. It took three overtimes to settle the matter, with Twiggs winning 26-20. The 1-4 Bulldogs visit Lincolnton next Friday.

Johnson County and ECI also took extra time to settle their 3-A West fuss. The Trojans finally won out in two overtimes 31-24 to remain undefeated, while ECI drops to 3-2.

Prince Avenue shocked Region 8-A with a 28-7 win over always tough Athens Academy. The Spartans lost 7 turnovers, and three times failed to convert on fourth down. Prince Avenue was led by running back William McNeely with 19 carries for 278 yards and 4 TDs. [game story]

Charlton County, Clinch County, Wesleyan, and Miller County continued to roll with big wins.
