Three of the dozen Class A teams that were undefeated going into last night's games suffered their first loss.
The big showdown in Class A this week happened down in The Swamp in Folkston, where kickoff was delayed 40 minutes due to lightning. The hometown Charlton County Indians took a 2-0 lead in the first minute after Wilcox County suffered a safety, but the Patriots came back for a 28-18 win in the battle between undefeateds for Region 2-A supremacy. Wilcox improved to 7-0 while Charlton is 6-1.
The big upset of the week happened in Twin City when Portal jumped out to a 10-0 lead then held off the ECI Bulldogs for an 18-8 win. ECI was without one of its big playmakers, who is out with a torn ACL. The Bulldogs are now 6-1.
Another upset happened in Columbus, when undefeated Brookstone was upended by Central of Talbotton 40-34 in Region 4-A. Central is now 3-3 while the Cougars fall to 6-1.
Closer to home, Washington-Wilkes trailed Hancock Central 34-21 in the fourth quarter before tying the game at 34 and winning 41-40 in overtime. The Tigers have now won 3 or their last 4 as they wait for our Red Devils to arrive this coming Friday.
Aquinas continued to roll with a 55-0 drubbing of hapless Twiggs County. Warren County and Wilkinson County had the week off.
