JV Whips Evans 21-7

September 01, 2005

Lincoln County's Junior Varsity won its second game of the year with a 21-7 win over Class AAAAA Evans at the Knight's castle.

LC won the toss and deferred to the second half which put the LC kick off team and the defense to an early test. Both teams came through as the kickoff team pinned Evans deep in its own territory and the defense held its ground and forced Evans to punt. After starting with good field position, the Red Devil offense stalled against a stingy Evans defense that held the young Devils' running game at bay for most of the game.

The first quarter saw LC and Evans swap offenses and defenses with both teams using their punt teams and punt return teams quite often. The game remained scoreless as the first quarter ended.

The LC JV scored first early in the second quarter on a pass from Alex Ellis to Darrien West and with the PAT from Vance Tarver, the score was 7-0

After a solid kickoff, the Red Devil defense held Evans and its running and passing game to a handful of plays. After an Evans punt, the young Devils drove down the field with several strong runs from Jamereon Green. Late in the 2nd quarter, QB Bo Reed threw a TD pass to wideout Wilkes Goolsby for the second score of the day.
The missed PAT made the score 13-0 which is how the half ended.

The Evans Knights came out strong in the second half and kept the ball on offense for nearly half of the 3rd quarter. The Knights drove down the field and after several runs and short passes, the Knights' QB connected with the tightend on a short pass for their first score of the game and after the PAT, the score closed to LC 13- Evans 7.

On the ensuing kickoff from Evans, our Red Devil deep return man Dechane Willis ran right up the middle for an 80-yard touchdown. After a 2 point conversion, Big Red led by 14.

The rest of the 3rd and most of the 4th quarter saw the Evans Knights JV offense test our LC defense with small runs and short passes that was just enough to give Evans the first downs needed to keep drives alive. Coach Mark Flowers' defense stood the test and had a " BEND BUT DON"T BREAK" performance. Coach Flowers remarked, "I have to give credit to Evans, they did not quit. They kept battling."

Late in the 4th quarter, Dechane Willis picked off an Evans pass to help preserve the Red Devils win.

JV Head Coach Kevin Blizzard commented after starting 2-0, "I think Evans was a real tough opponent today. Their defense stuffed our running game pretty much all day. Our passing game along with great special teams play scored the points today. It really helps when our defense plays as well as it did today."

Our thanks to Coach Kevin Blizzard for the game report.
